Former Miss Malawi beauty queen: Blandina Khondowe

"I had developed a very ambitious plan of action on what I was expected to achieve but I failed to achieve my plans because the office had no money," said Khondowe. The former Miss Malawi said another problem during her tenure of office was that some people were misinterpreting her office. "They were talking a lot of issues about us I remember even some were saying that we were going around with Carver Bhima  [the organiser] which was not true. What I know was that Mr Bhima was just trying to protect us from the men who were always after us," she said. Khondowe revealed that at one time Bhima employed some chaperone to help them tame maurauding men with open zips. "Because of this development, people were saying why is Bhima so jealousy of the Miss Malawi, this means he has an agenda, which was not true," she explained. Events Management Ltd Bhima a company which has just handed over the Licence to the two media giants, NPL and ZBS,  concurred with Khondow, saying there will indeed be a sanity in the office of the Miss Malawi. "We were struggling financially, I remember at one time it took the whole me extending a begging ball to the former President Dr Bakili Muluzi who game me K300,000, at that time it was a huge amount of money," said Bhima. Bhima denied having any sexual desires towards the Miss Malawi beauty pageants. He said his office was very professional all the time. Khondowe was crowned Miss Malawi in 2002 at the age of 21. She was crowned the title during her last year of Business studies at Polytechnic. During her time in office, she became automatic tourism ambassador. NPL Chief Executive Officer, Ms Mbumba Banda, says the ZBS and NPL have teamed up in order to fill the gap which has been existing. "Every day, the two media houses reaches out to and interact with people through newspapers, radio, and Television including online mediums," said Mbumba. Zodiak’s  Teresa Ndanga, spokesperson of the task force, said Miss Malawi is another way of empowering women. So, we are going to each and every district to scout and audition and the selected will compete at regional level,” Ndanga said. The five-year joint project will see the two private media houses run the Miss Malawi beauty contest, which has been docile for close to four years. The last beauty queen to be crowned was Susan Mtegha in 2012.
