Uhuru unveiled as Malawi Lake of Stars headliners

Uhuru coming to Malawi

South Africa’s award-winning band, Uhuru, are the the main headliners at this year’s Lake of Stars (LoS) festival slated for next month. [caption id="attachment_93003" align="alignright" width="594"]Uhuru coming to Malawi Uhuru coming to Malawi[/caption] Event organisers disclosed on Monday that the “Y Tju Ku Tja” hit makers will perform on the opening night, Friday, 25th September. LoS, Malawi’s biggest arts festival, is set to take place at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi from 25 to 27 September. Having won the 2015 MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA) for best collaboration with Davido in July this year, Uhuru are taking the continent by storm with their unique style of kwaito/house music. “Last year we had the acclaimed Mafikizolo as one of our international headliners, a band that collaborated with Uhuru on award winning and hit single “Kona”. Uhuru  also produced the smashing hit “Y Tju Ku Tja” and collaborated with big names in the African music industry such as; Professor, Wiz Kid, DJ Buckz and Sowey. “SA’s Channel 24 recently reported Uhuru’s collaboration with Speedy and  Grammy nominated artist Raheem Devaughn, so we are really looking forward to them rocking main stage at LoS,” explained LoS director Will Jameson. Uhuru will join local heavy hitters and favourites which include; Lucius Banda, Sally Nyundo, Lulu, Gwamba, Agorrosso and Dan Lu, making this year’s festival the best one yet. “Being the final regional headliner to be announced, we are excited to have this very talented band come in for this years festival. As Lake of Stars, one of our aims is support local artists by providing platforms through the festival for them to expose their music to local and international audiences. “An essential part of making this happen is opening up links to regional and international artists through connections with acts from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana, DRC, England, and Scotland,” added Jameson. The South African music heavyweights will also perform at the festival with already confirmed local acts for this year’s festival such as; Bucci, Danny Kalima, George Kalukusha, Michael Mountain, Donnex Muva, Neil and the new vibration, The Smooth Groovers, Lusubilo Band, Gasper Nali, Body, Mind and Soul, Jaco Jana and Lady Pace. Additional acts from the regional and  international scene include; Young Fathers (Scotland), Ric Hassani (Nigeria), Toya Delazy (South Africa), The Undergrounds (SA), DJ Fosta (SA),  EJ von Lyrik (SA),  bFake (SA), Etoile de la Paix (DR Congo), Menes (DR Congo),Deana Weeks (Nambia), and Ingvild Homme (Norway). Also billed to perform are Ambassadors from the UN’s SYP project; Bryan K (Zimbabwe), DJ Kaliwa (Zambia),  KrTC (Swaziland), Stlofa (Lesotho), Tha Dogg (Namibia) and Zues (Bostwana). LoS has since indicated that “more artists will announced soon”. According to Jameson, LoS has also partnered with Sunny Money who are providing 200 solar lights at the festival, which will then be donated to communities in Mangochi. Meanwhile, the festival which has partnered with Airtel, Malawian Airlines, DSTV, Capital FM, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Creative Scotland, Sunbird Hotels and Resorts and Concerts SA, is running a discounted LoS ticket promotion on Airtel money. Festival goers subscribed to the Airtel money services can purchase their LoS tickets at an K8,000 discount by selecting the following options: *211# > Make Payments > Pay Bill > Other > ‘LOS2015’ > K25,000. There is however a maximum of one discounted ticket per account. Advance 2015 LoS tickets can also be bought at Papaya, Mabuya Camp, Flavours Café, Multichoice and Koko Bean Café in Lilongwe; Café Ameca, Steers, Multichoice, The Quarter Bistro, Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre; and in Mzuzu at Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel.
