Her school mate Vanessa Chiutsi, 20, took the first princess position while Tunosiwe Mwakalenga, 19, became the second princess. The beauty pageant, which had 12 contestants, took place at the College of Medicine Sports Complex Hall. They paraded in different attires including office, traditional, casual and dinner before a panel of three judges Gladys Kumbatira, Annie Ganiza and Jones Kumwenda took them through question time. The questions centred on their understanding on the Miss Blantyre theme “beyond beauty”. “Mainly our judgement was based on their intelligence, mental capability, innovation and of course beyond beauty. As the city’s ambassador, they need to have the brains and have to be presentable,” disclosed Ganiza in an interview. The Top 5 had Machero, Chiutsi, Mwakalenga, Loveness Chikalimba and Sandra Kalua. Machero said she did not see the crown coming her way because the other contenders gave her a run for her money. “The competition was stiff, honestly I didn’t see it coming,” admitted Machero, who indicated Miss Blantyre was her first major beauty pageant. As the new Miss Blantyre, Machero said she would work with the City Council to keep the city clean and carry on with the projects which her predecessor Nerani Nthara started. She further disclosed: “I will also get involved in charity work.” During the event, a selection of the country’s urban musicians among them Blakjak, Lady Pace, Mwanache, Nesnes and Blak Nina entertained the patrons that filled the hall.
