The artist, who is now based in Norway, owns a studio in Oslo and is one of the few Malawian artists selling music on iTunes made the remarks in an interview .
“We have a lot of great artist making good music in Malawi however it doesn't have to end only in Malawi. There are more opportunities out there if we reach out,” he said.
“I believe in Malawi music and the future of it. Coming from a Club and Radio DJ background, I have good knowledge of our music and struggle artist go through to get their music out there to the audience.
“ We have a lot to learn in terms of production and management, of which these two are the key to any artist´s success. What we are missing is exposure,” Drew noted.
Asked about his silence on the local scene, Drew rebuffed: “I have not been quiet on the music scene actually; I think it all depends on where you are asking.
“I have not stopped making and releasing music. If you search online on iTunes and other online download and streaming sites my music has always been there. My new EP is titled Suitcase.”
The former FM 101 DJ related the new EP to a real Suitcase, saying generally a suitcase has different things in it, newspapers, diaries, pencils or pens, all with different purposes. Similar to the context of his new EP, different songs with different meanings and purposes.
“I have a very interesting way of selecting titles for my albums actually. Usually I just go through my vinyl collection, close my eyes and pick one record and the first word I see when I open my eyes becomes the title of my Album. If I have to describe the link between the chosen title and the content of the Album,” he disclosed.
He couldn’t help but point out that he has transformed to playing his own music just like all the big names like David Guetta, Dj Cleo, Skrillex and many more, he added, “I have been playing a lot of gigs in nightclubs since moving to Europe and just recently I had a Launch Party Concert for my EP in Oslo which was a great event.”
On his new self-produced EP, he has collaborated with a USA Saxophonist Jason Nemor Harden, a percussionist from Mozambique currently living in Europe by the name of Calú Carlos and a Norwegian Spoken word artist and Vocalist by the name of Maria Sundby on a track titled “Dance through the Jungle”.
His last projects include “One Way Street” and “Bus Driver” which came out in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The fist single released from “One Way Street EP” titled “Ancient Africa” got great reviews on one of leading radio stations in Norway called NRK P3 both on radio and their online streaming page.
Meanwhile, Drew’s music is streaming online on Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Amazon, GooglePlay and can be downloaded on iTunes, Beatport, Amazon and all digital distribution networks throughout the internet.-Mana
