Mhango was quick to thank Malawians for voting. “Thank you Malawi for making me feel like a star, the State President’s congratulatory message, the airport welcome team, the road show, the overwhelming love and great support from the media et al. Together we made it,” she said. She told reporters  after the award ceremony, “I can’t say I saw this coming, but I was always very calm and not bothered about anything. “Looking at the names I was up against, these are big people in the film industry, not only in South Africa but on the continent as well. But I had to ask myself as why I was nominated alongside them? It means there’s something in the movie.” Meanwhile, Malawi Film Association President Ezaius Mkandawire has congratulated the win saying the award will encourage many up-and-coming film makers to work hard and improve their work. He added that the country needed more torch bearers like Mhango to lead the foundation of a viable industry, stressing that it was high time locally produced films were being recognized. However, Malawian movie lovers have expressed dismay on how the movie industry is operating in the country, saying they are usually caught unaware when such things happen. “It’s good that we are being recognized and winning awards. But it’s sad that outside countries get to watch our movies first before us. I wonder where the screenings take place when the movies are done,” bemoaned Yvonne Nsena, a local movie fanatic. Her remarks could be evidenced in random interviews conducted by this reporter as Lilongwe city dwellers expressed ignorance on the award. Mhango’s Lilongwe has joined the likes of Shemu Joya’s Seasons of a Life and May Taheradeh’s Mercy’s Blessing which have also won multiple international movie awards. Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) is an annual accolade presented by Multichoice recognizing outstanding achievement in television and film, voted on by the general public. The inaugural Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards ceremony was held in Lagos, Nigeria on 9 March 2013, and was broadcast live in more than 50 countries. Entries into the award ceremony are films and TV series that have been aired on Dstv Channels in the previous year.
