This is another great achievement for Elle Mak, born Michelle Makunganya, having been featured on Rip The Runway UK, a show sponsored by BET.
The Miss Black Africa UK is a competition for young African girls born or living in the United Kingdom and gives them a platform to showcase not only their beauty but their culture, talent and creativity.
According to the competition’s website, the main goal is to use the allure of beauty queens and models as tools to advocate for the needy and campaign or fund-raise for the less privileged.
The winner becomes a goodwill ambassador for Miss Black Africa, charged with designing and implementing a charity program based on their Pageant Platform. This year’s grand finale will take place on 10th of October 2015 at Newham Town Hall, London.
The competition is part of the Miss Black Africa Pageant and Charity Awards. In addition to the beauty competition, the grand finale is a charity award ceremony recognising individuals and organisations that have in one way or another contributed immensely to a good cause.
“As queen I aim to inspire and empower the youth to be more innovative and I can only do this with your support. Knowing this, I ask that Malawi helps me by voting for me.
“I want to use my success to also promote ‘Umunthu’ and Malawian creative arts, tourism and culture. You never know I might even go as far as Miss World if I get enough votes,” says Elle Mak.
Straight from the warm heart of Africa, Elle Mak has always had a passion for modeling, music – singing and dancing from a very tender age.
After leaving Malawi in 2000 with the support of her mother and sister (singer Hazel Mak), at the age of 14, Michelle began to perfect her crafts as an entertainer, whilst remaining dedicated to her academic studies.
As a Law graduate, modeling has always been a major part of Michelle’s childhood, trained from the age of 5 how to grace the runway by her mother Doreen Makunganya, then fashion designer, the 22-year-old Elle Mak never gave up her passion and still models.
In the past Elle has modeled for Marks and Spencer, Lily Alfonso, the Amelia Couture Fashion, Ghana UK Fashion Week for Ghanaian label Otema designs.
Not only is Michelle a freelance model she also trains models runway walk and offers assistance backstage for some fashion shows. Using her experiences as a professional model, she hopes to return to Malawi in October 2015 to start a model training program called Melanin Royals.
Not only does Elle take pride in representing Malawi on a musical platform as a trumpet player, vocalist and songwriter, she has also consistently carried the flag of Malawi with her throughout her dancing career.
She was ranked in UK Unsigned’s Top 6 Best Freestyle Dancers of 2008 at the prestigious Hackney Empire theater in London, as well as landing the lead role as Alice in the short film “Gascoigne: The Untold Story”, which marked the birth of her acting career .
Having also graduated with an honours degree in Law, it is clear to say that Elle Mak is a young lady of many talents – as she continues to perfect her craft as a model, lawyer, women’s empowerment activist, singer-songwriter, dancer and actor.
There is no doubt that Elle Mak’s future is certainly bright and definitely one to watch out for.

Socio-Economic Impact of Mzuzu Fashion Week:
Fashion Week is more than a chance to show off clothing, it is a convergence of art, passion and creativity. It is an opportunity for Malawi’s designers to display their talent and vision through fabric.
Internationally, according to a report entitled “The Economic Impact Of The Fashion Industry”, fashion is a 1.2 trillion dollar industry. It creates thousands of jobs a year and generates notable revenue.
In New York City alone (considered the Fashion Capital of the World), the industry pays more than 11 billion USD in wages and generates about 2 billion USD in revenue annually. In addition to creating jobs and merchandise, the city attracts more numerous tourists to the city every year for fashion shows, fairs and events.
Mzuzu Fashion Week would therefore like to establish Mzuzu as Malawi’s leading Fashion hub that will grow to be recognized internationally. Such a status would draw tourists and investors into Malawi’s fastest growing city, thereby providing employment and revenue.

Think Pink!
Women and girls are a strong pillar in every society. By educating them on breast health issues, a wider circle of the community becomes knowledgeable. The Breast Cancer problem in Malawi needs to be assertively attended to in order to reduce the mortality rate of women. Valuable lives of women of the reproductive age who may possibly have aided in developing Malawi are being lost needlessly due to lack of awareness of the disease.
Therefore, #ThinkPinkMW aims to reduce the number of deaths from Breast Cancer by raising awareness on the importance of early detection of breast cancer which can save lives and to advocate for complete treatment for breast cancer in Malawi. www.facebook.com/thinkpinkmw
The MzFW team and its designers have as this year’s corporate social responsibility initiative chosen to support Think Pink! During Thursdays show (Mother’s Day) there will be a Think Pink! Segment of the show where all the designers will showcase 1 pink piece. All the pieces will go up for auction and all the proceeds donated to Think Pink Malawi!
Quotes:
“What better way to celebrate fashion in Malawi than by participating in the first ever Mzuzu Fashion Week with other talented local designers and spreading the love for fashion” Kylie Uta Brown (MisK)
“The Base is bringing to the table that everyday trendy plus tribal African style, something that is not too traditional but also not too westernized so come through and see what Creative Base is all about during Fashion Week” Christopher Ngalu (Creative Base Designs)
“African Print Madness (APM) is all about classic trends and fabrics. I am so passionate about clothes I love fashion even both my grandfather and mother were designers so I guess fashion runs in the family. Check out how we keep it trendy yet classic at APM!” Elton Mascum (African Print Madness -APM)
“We at Northside Glam Hair & Beauty Salon are happy to be a part of this historical event. We promise to bring you absolute excellence as fashion takes a huge turn not only in Mzuzu but the whole of Malawi. You definitely want to be a part of this event.” Towela Singini (Northside Glam Hair & Beauty Salon)
Final Note from the Mzuzu Fashion Week Team:
Additionally, more than simply providing a platform for local designers to promote their products, the event hopes to inspire a new generation of fashion designers and entrepreneurs. These individuals could then use their skills to create jobs as well as products that may be exported, thereby generating revenue for the nation. The event also aims to raise the standard of quality in Malawi’s fashion industry.
It will serve as a place where stakeholders can network, compete and learn from one another. This would thereby lead to a greater demand for Malawian clothing and thereby boost the nation’s economic standing. Mzuzu Fashion Week would like to ask for the support of the government, the private sector and Malawi as a whole as MzFW has the potential to be a major contributor to Malawi’s socio-economic growth.

Face of Malawi UK: New beauty contest for men and women to launch in London
A new beauty pageant for male and female categories is to be launched in London called Face of Malawi UK, organisers have said.
According to Beauty Phekani and Sheila Banda Tobie; founders of the contest, told Nyasa Times that while they appreciate that, beauty is still one of the most highly valued characteristics a woman can possess; they will involve men to show the beautiful face of Malawi with an objective of charitable works.
They say beauty competitions in these modern days are not only about picking the prettiest girl but it is about so much more than that.
“"Pageants have really moved on, it is now about who the girls are inside rather than looking at them just physically. And the boys also have the beauty that they can be ambassadors for Face of Malawi UK," said Phekani.
She said Face of Malawi UK is evolving to a charity organisation and would use the title holders to carry its activities in Malawi.
The organisers said their contest will be “more progressive” and a departure of the traditional beauty pageant stereotypes.
“The event is in Stratford, London on the 5th of December,” Phekani disclosed.
Meanwhile, organisers said they are looking for both male and female from the ages of 17 to 35 in the UK, even those in Ireland, Scotland and Wale who are willing to join dozens of those who have already confirmed participation to register to their www.faceofmalawi.co.uk. Blakjak expresses dismay at Malawi artists’ representation at Lake of Stars
Malawi’s dancehall artist Blakjak has expressed dismay at festivals giving minimal opportunity to local artists.
[caption id="attachment_95230" align="alignright" width="500"] Blakjak expresses dismay at local artists’ representation at Lake of Stars[/caption]
He went on a rant producing a list of artists he feels should have made it to this year’s Lake of Stars (LoS) music festival, scheduled for this weekend in Mangochi.
“The Saddest Thing Happening At LOS Is That The Lineup Doesn’t have #Me , #MaBlaks, #Skeffa , #Maskal #Piksy #Martse , #Fredokiss #Diktator.
“Missing On LOS Lineup #HazelMac #HomeGrownAfrica #PetienceNamadingo #Mafo #Janta #BarryOne #TayGrin #DareDevilz #TrapSquad”, he shared the list that would have made it to the annual Sunbird Nkopola Beach festival.
Tempting as it is to say Blakjak’s wishlist is a pretty big deal, we might have a clue as to why some of these artists won’t make it to LoS.
Renowned artist Piksy cited that the deal offered on the table was not lucrative enough for him.
“The offer wasn’t that appetizing,” said Piksy
This may not apply to all the artists but gives a clear picture as to why some of these artists who have been buzzing this year missed out.
Lake of Stars, touted as one of the best music festivals in the world, pays local artists as low as K50,000 (about US$80) while international artists are offered millions of Kwacha for performing at the same event.
According to inside sources, international headliners get as high as US$40,000 (about K25 million).
But LoS organisers are on record to have defended the payments offered to local acts, saying they “research” and do “consultations” on how much Malawian artists are paid.
And according to LoS festival director Will Jameson, most international artists come as volunteers as some are “sponsored” by local and foreign organisations.
On the other hand, Blakjak congratulated hip-hop artist Gwamba for being booked to perfom at the three-day festival which kicks off this Friday, saying he deserved it.
Blakjak is currently promoting his Sand Music Festival headlining where he will share stage with Jamaican reggae-dancehall icon Busy Signal.
On Tuesday, Sand Fest director Lucius Banda confirmed of Busy Signal’s perfomance at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach.
The three-day Sand Music Festival, which is said to be the best paying festival in Malawi, is slated for 30th October to 1st November this year.
