GOtv hikes subscription, remove channels – Multichoice Malawi
GOtv customers in the country will from this Sunday start paying more for subscription following decision by Multichoice Malawi to increase prices.
[caption id="attachment_53642" align="alignright" width="600"] GOtv, which uses the latest generation digital video broadcast, a cheaper selection of programming from Africa as well as international channels[/caption]
Multichoice is expected to increase monthly subscription price effective 8th November, 2015 for both GOtv Value and GOtv Plus bouquets.
The subscription price has been increased from K3,400 to K3,800 for the GOtv Value bouquet and from K4,700 K 5200 for the GOtv Plus bouquet.
Multichoice Malawi Sales and Marketing Manager, Chimwemwe Nyirenda said the increase was due to depreciation of Kwacha as well as a rise in operation costs.
''This Malawi Kwacha subscription price increase is necessitated by the increase in operating costs for Broadcasting which uses a lot of electrical energy,'' explained Nyirenda.
He added: ''And the loss of value of the Malawi Kwacha against the US$ which affects license fees and the purchase cost of programming''.
Asked if the increment will not have any effect on customers, Nyirenda said they had already considered their subscribers before coming up with the subscription price change.
''In determining the price increase various factors are taken into account, including the impact on the subscriber and we do not make these decisions without due consideration''.
GOtv subscribers have of late witnessed a removal of some channels including One Gospel and BET2- which will be removed from 1st December.
However, Nyirenda defended the decision, saying channels are removed or added to ensure subscribers get a balanced variety of programming.
''MultiChoice reserves the right to add or remove channels when assessing the performance and viability of channels on the platform.
''To facilitate a review of the content and achieve a diverse variety of programming, we took a decision to remove or add channels In reviewing our offering - which we do on a continual basis''.
On signal challenges, he said some customers do not always understand the technicalities of installing the antenna correctly which leads to poor reception.
''We have invested a lot in training GOtv Mmisili people who can help the subscribers with technical difficulties''.
Founded on January 18, 2013, GOtv is regarded as one of the cheapest pay television which has over 29 great channels, from religion series, documentaries, drama, politics, sports and music among others.

“The 2015 Tumaini Festival is happening on Saturday, 14 November, and it’s going to be another fun-packed arts and cultural festival. Following the success of the 2014 Tumaini festival, we decided to put together another festival this year,” he said.

Highlighting on the importance of the festival, Mpauni said this event presents a unique opportunity for Malawians and refugees to promote intercultural harmony through entertainment and artistic expression.
“The festival brings together people from different cultural backgrounds and talents so this event provides a platform for them to share experiences and learn from each other,” he said.

The 21-year-old, currently in her fourth-year studying Accounting, was crowned Miss Blantyre Friday night.
Her school mate Vanessa Chiutsi, 20, took the first princess position while Tunosiwe Mwakalenga, 19, became the second princess.
The beauty pageant, which had 12 contestants, took place at the College of Medicine Sports Complex Hall.
They paraded in different attires including office, traditional, casual and dinner before a panel of three judges Gladys Kumbatira, Annie Ganiza and Jones Kumwenda took them through question time.
The questions centred on their understanding on the Miss Blantyre theme “beyond beauty”.
“Mainly our judgement was based on their intelligence, mental capability, innovation and of course beyond beauty. As the city’s ambassador, they need to have the brains and have to be presentable,” disclosed Ganiza in an interview.
The Top 5 had Machero, Chiutsi, Mwakalenga, Loveness Chikalimba and Sandra Kalua.
Machero said she did not see the crown coming her way because the other contenders gave her a run for her money.
“The competition was stiff, honestly I didn’t see it coming,” admitted Machero, who indicated Miss Blantyre was her first major beauty pageant.
As the new Miss Blantyre, Machero said she would work with the City Council to keep the city clean and carry on with the projects which her predecessor Nerani Nthara started.
She further disclosed: “I will also get involved in charity work.”
During the event, a selection of the country’s urban musicians among them Blakjak, Lady Pace, Mwanache, Nesnes and Blak Nina entertained the patrons that filled the hall.

Manganya blasts MBC over ‘Tikuferanji’
Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) country director Michael Usi has taken a swipe at state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), mainly it's director general Aubrey Simbuleta for blocking latest 'Tikuferanji' episode.
[caption id="attachment_81732" align="alignright" width="385"] Usi: Blast MBC 's 'retrogressive order' on Tikuferanji[/caption]
The latest episode was supposed to be aired last Saturday, but the state broadcaster's Director General reportedly shoved the series as its content were reportedly not in favour of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government.
Instead MBC Tv repeated a programme that was shown a fortnight ago without seeking consent from ADRA, a development that did not go well with Usi, who took trouble to confront MBC management over it.
Usi, widely known as Manganya in comedy circles , said he was surprised when his eyes caught a repeated Tikufera programme when they had produced a latest series and was duly given to the state broadcaster for beaming last Saturday.
"We pay them K25 million every year to have Tikuferanji beamed on state television. Their conduct breached the contract existing between MBC and ADRA
"The programme was replaced following a directive from above and it is the director general himself who made this retrogressive order and chose to breach our agreement. He made the directive just because of the fear of unknown. Tikuferanji is non-partisan and is there to address issues on human rights, gender, democracy and good governance," said Usi.
He said they will not produce another episode until MBC beam the series in question.
When asked whether they will consider pulling out the programmes, the outspoken comedian said "they must respect the contract which is there, but if they don't go by the agreement, appropriate action will likely be taken".
When contacted to provide his side of the story, MBC director general Aubrey Simbuleta declined to comment.
The focus of the drama series has slowly been widening to encompass not only HIV/AIDS issues but also addressing issues on human rights, gender, democracy and other social topics.
ADRA Malawi has a long history of over 20 years of implementing HIV/AIDS programs, working in a range of methods of HIV prevention, treatment and care support and 'Tikuferani' is also aimed at preventing and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS.
ADRA uses Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) methodologies through mass media and community based mobilization and advocacy.
The drama series called Tikuferanji “Why are we dying?” produced by the ADRA Malawi has been on the radio for nearly 13 years and on television for approximately 8 years disseminating HIV/AIDS messages.
And it is one of the popular television shows and it received the radio play of the Year Award at the 2008 MBC Entertainers of Year Awards, and it has been voted the best advocacy program in Malawi on radio and television.

US envoy hails Zodiak as pillar of Malawi democracy
US ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer has singled out Zodiak Broadcasting Services as a clear example of a media house shaping Malawi's politics and democracy citing the first ever presidential debates in the run up to the 2014 polls.
[caption id="attachment_97665" align="alignright" width="427"] US Ambassador Virginia Palmer hails Zodiak[/caption]
Palmer said it was pleasing that Zodiak was among key media groups in Malawi that is keeping leaders transparent and accountable to the people.
She was speaking at Zodiak offices on Tuesday in Lilongwe when she paid a courtesy call.
"This is good for democracy and good governance," said Palmer who said media is key to informing people about the public sector reform programme so that in turn they make contributions.
She said the reforms can be well effective and efficient only if there are contributions from ordinary Malawians.
The US envoy said everyone, including the media, have a role to play to make Malawi free of hunger and have their basic things in life.
She said sometimes politicians avoid making tough decisions on crucial issues in fear of losing votes in the next elections, saying the media has a role to play to guide politicians in such situations.
ZBS managing director Gospel Kazako said the radio station fights for gender equality, ensuring that girls are retained in school, Malawi is hunger free, fight deforestation and champion climate change matters among others.
Zodiak this year is celebrating 10 years of its existence as a private commercial broadcaster and has won Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi chapter awards year after year.

She added: “I’d like to give a shout to the team behind Sangie, my managers, producers, the media and all of you for the support”.
During the awards, which were part of the UMP Festival run by Nde’feyo Entertainment, hip-hop artist Gwamba won the Artist of the Year award. He was facing stiff competition from Nepman, Sangie and Janta.
The Producer of the Year award went to Blantyre-based Tricky Beatz, producer of two of the songs that were up for Song of the Year; Nepman’s “Na Lero” and Martse feat Kell Kay’s “Mwano”.
Martse and Kell Kay were the ones who went home smiling after their song came top against “Na Lero”, Janta’s “Divorce” and Sonye’s “Tsika”.
After missing out on the Artist of the Year and Producer of the Year, singer-cum-producer Janta scooped Video of the Year for the song “Divorce”.
Apart from the five categories, there was a special category for Lifetime Achievers and two awards went out to the late dancehall icon Mafunyeta and South Africa-based Criminal A, one of the pioneers of hip-hop music in Malawi.
The UMP, a celebration of urban music and culture in the country, attracted mammoth crowds of over 4,000 fans who came out to revel with their favourite artists as they celebrate the growing industry.
The party, hosted by Mphatso Chaluluka aka Junior C and ex-Big Brother Africa housemate Sipe, started with a 15-minute fashion show, before rapper Genii Blakk took over to take the fans through an MCs Battle.

Nepman has stolen my song ’Chilawe Changachi’, claims Black Nina
Trouble keeps on brewing on the local music scene with more ill-fated surprises being unfolded every day. Forget the Trap Squad and Soul Rebel Entertainment beef. Nepman has taken the attention after reports that he has now stolen a song “Chilawe Changachi” by Black Nina which featured him.
[caption id="attachment_97848" align="alignright" width="600"] Black Nina: Nepman has stolen my song 'Chilawe Changachi'[/caption]
[caption id="attachment_97847" align="alignright" width="600"] Nepman: Chilawe Changachi[/caption]
Black Nina is quoted by Malawi Zoom that the “Na Lero” hit maker has been performing the song at various shows with Zembani Band, refusing to take him along, and that he also included the song in his album “Kunzambwe”
“I should say am so much distressed by the actions of Nepman and his manager Kabol Lombwe for taking my song and now, they making money out of it without respecting my copyright rights of the song,” explained Black Nina, real name Thokozani Masona.
Nepman’s Manager Kabol Lombwe could not respond to messages enquiring about the issue.
According to Black Nina, Kabol vulgarly challenged him to report anywhere after he tried to reason with him.
“I took up the issue with him and asked if they could at least take me to the shows so I can perform alongside Nepman even if they don’t pay me because all I want is to establish myself and get known to people. Kabol refused and then I asked him to stop Nepman from performing the song, but he never took any action until recently when I came across the news that he has included my song in Nepman’s album which he was selling in South Africa where he went to perform,” complained Black Nina.
“When I asked him why he is selling my song, he rudely told me to report anywhere and stop bothering him. Am an upcoming artist and he knows that I can’t afford a lawyer that’s why he has treated me like this despite the successful project I had with Nepman. It’s so unfortunate many people don’t even know that ‘Chilawe Changachi’ is my song and not Nepman’s,” he said.
After releasing “Na Leo”, Nepman got involved in a number of projects that saw artists chasing his voice for a chorus, including Black Nina, an upcoming artist from Blantyre who banged the airwaves with “Chilawe Changachi.”

Nepman does not claim owning hit song ‘Chilawe Changachi’ – Manager
The “Na Lero” star Nepman does not claim to own hit song “Chilawe Changachi”, his manger Kabol has said , responding to Blantyre up-and-coming afro rapper Black Nina’s claims that Nepman stole the song and included it on his newly-released album “Kuzambwe”.
[caption id="attachment_98039" align="alignright" width="500"] Kabol: Nepman has never claimed that he owns the song.[/caption]
“Chilawe Changachi”, Black Nina’s song which features Nepman, is one of the hottest local tracks in Malawi.
Malawi Zoom online entertainment news reported that Black Nina claimed Nepman thieved the hit song.
But Kabol confirmed that “Chilawe Changachi” was Black Nina’s song.
“Nepman has never claimed that he owns the song, but these guys had an agreement that Nepman can use the song and Nina can do the same,” said Kabol to Nyasa Showbiz.
He claims that it was Black Nina who asked for the song to be included in Nepman’s compilation, but the idea was rejected based on how the song had already been popular.
According tp Black Nina, the song was recorded in December 2014 before Nepman shot to fame.
“The time we did that song Nepman was not a household name as he is now. I did the collabo with him because he has been a friend since 2013. First time we met at Mtanda Media in Ndirande and that was the time we discussed doing a collabo,” disclosed the artist.
Black Nina says all he is asking for is his share of the sale proceeds on the song.
“He can perform it, it’s a hit song and on top of that he is in the track, so he can perform it, but not own the song. They have sold the song, I need to have my share,” demands Black Nina.

Phyzix drops new gospel hip-hop single
He is lively, creative, energetic and relevant in the game. Certainly, he knows how to keep his audience entertained and on their feet but this time he is a different mission with his music. He is out to fish people not for worldly entertainment but to turn them to their maker – God.
[caption id="attachment_98188" align="alignright" width="504"] Phyzix[/caption]
He is back.
Malawi’s music Afro hip-hop music prodigy Phyzix (real name Noel Chikoleka) has finally come out of his cocoon and dropped his new single, a gospel after turning to God and became a born again Christian, with a cheekily teasing “Chitsanzo” on Wednesday night.
The husky-voiced urban Hip-hop lyricist and rapper Phyzix, the Cholapitsa hit-maker on Wednesday afternoon announced on social media, Facebook and Twitter, the single would be released in just a matter of hours.
“New music alert! A new single is dropping today - #Chitsanzo. ‘Gamba wa Suit’ is back, but this time call me ‘Gamba wa Yesu’ with my latest single featuring MUMA award winner Danny Kalima aka Sirius. Hope you guys will like it,” he posted on Facebook.
The ‘Zangoyamba Mwachibwana’ rapper who is singing about his spiritual journey in the song later followed up the announcement with a tweet saying, “Urban Gospel Hip-hop single coming today! “Chitsanzo!”
“Iwe ndi uti? Gamba wopemphera, C’mon! Yeah! Phyzix. Ngati ndaborna winawake aborna! Ngati ndasintha, winawake asintha! Ngati ndamudziwa Yesu, amudziwa Yesu. Amandiwerenga mafanawa / Mayuthiwa! Ndikhale ndikhale chitsanzo cha Mafanawa, cha Mayuthiwa...” sings Phyzix in part with Kalima spicing the song with his silky-soft voice that is doing nothing but soothing the listeners’ pregnant hearts and at the same time massaging their souls.
The track is the single single off Phyzix’s highly-anticipated upcoming gospel album, “Gamba wa Yesu,” following his last secular album “Gamba wa Suit.”
Phyzix who is marketer by profession but one of the popular rappers in Malawi music echelons because of his ghetto approach to his music, a few months ago announced to his fans and the music world that he has received Jesus Christ as his personal saviour but did not say anything about his future in music as regards his new status thereby leaving his fans and music lovers in a quagmire.
But now the good news is he is back but it seems with a mission to turn the youth to God if the message in his latest single, Chitsanzo is to go by.
In the song the Cholapitsa star makes it clear in the song which has been produced by his day one music protégé, Daredevils and BFB that he will from now onwards be the example for the youth to follow but is cautious and warns that he is not as clean as a slate emphasizing that he will only be an example for them to follow so he can lead them to Jesus Christ, the son of God the almighty.
The Born again Music whiz kid appears to have changed only the message in his music but he has maintained his style, flamboyance and music and he is crediting it all to God for helping him turn his life around.
Since becoming a born again, Phyzix has tried so hard to live his old ways as a secular music artist but dedicated his time to God.
The cover art the song is very suggestive of Phyzix’s statement of intent as it features the young children sweetly holding and looking at a placard emblazoned with the words ‘Chitsanzo.’ Pure genius!
In an interview, Phyzix who is getting engaged next month, on December 6th 2015, to his sweetheart and soul-mate, and fellow musician and Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) TV personality Ruth Kulaisi, says gave his life to God and will use his music to preach the gospel of the youth.
“My spiritual journey has been a rollercoaster since I turned to God. I am enjoying my new life. I am happy. However, I will continue with my music but this time I will use it to help my fellow youth and young adults to turn to God. I don’t claim to holy, I am will only be spreading the good news about the kingdom of God through my music,” he said.
He added: “I haven’t changed anything on my music apart from the message. I will play the same kind of music because most young people can relate to it, what is important is not the genre of music rather it is the message in it that matters. I am happy I turned to God.”
Asked on how he feels about his forthcoming engagement to his fiancée Ruth, Phyzix said he is looking forward to the big day.
“This is one of the greatest days in my life. I am looking forward to getting engaged to my best friend and soul mate. She is the best thing that has ever happened in my life and I thank God for her,” he said.
