Malawi school drama competition ATEM: Missed opportunity
My delight and ecstasy felt copiously betrayed. Utmost deception was the prize I got. Finite disappointment iswhat seized me by the neck back home to Zomba. All thanks to what had promised to be a neck to neck battle on drama and the mastery of the queen’s language. I naively swayed myself into missing the game between Chelsea and Manchester City with the hope of being entertained. I arrested my soul in a white black striped shirt, blue like pants and a white canvas in my feet. I carried my soul on the shoulder. Subjecting myself to a four wheeled creature that vomited me at HHI secondary school at exactly a ten minutes before eleven.
[caption id="attachment_104261" align="alignright" width="600"] Michiri View Girls School play at ATEM drama compeition: Tears shed no tears[/caption]
A swam of kids in there different school attire we seen running up and down the premise like a new born goat. Boys from the ghetto Ndirande playing soccer at the front of the school. I passed them straight to the hall where I was to witness the next Du Chisiza and Gentrude Kamkwatila. I went there to witness the resurrection of a dying industry. I stopped at the door to quench my thirst.
Astonishment engulfed me upon casting my eyes on one good friend of mine (name with-held) who was supposed to be in Theba chasing a degree. We shared two or three fairly-tales before we entered the battle field. We innocently occupied the front sit to have a few view of everything that was coming. A stunning voice shouted the name of my friend. We all made a hundred and eight degrees turn. A young girl sugar-coatedwith beauty made her way to greet my friend. She extended a handshake to me. Tingles were directed all over my body. She spoke to my friend but ask me what they talked about I cannot because my mind was taken by her beauty.
She left after someminutes but my mind was still thinking about her. We continued sharing the stories with friend I am not sure if he didn’t notice that my level of imagination had decreased. As a better part of my medulla oblongata was still tiring processing how one can be that beautiful and still be in school.
It didn’t take long before the mc announced that we were about to witness the first act of the day. My hope jumped with joy that soon young and upcoming actors will lock horns on stage. I quickly took out my rugged Nokia E5 responded to the text messages and then exposed it to the silent profile.
It wasn’t long before the first act stormed the stage. A brim of excitement consumed my entire face. Happiness upon seeing the young lads got on stage. With zeal and motivation they started showing their acting antics. From the beginning I told myself today my artistic lust will be quenched I will head home satisfied.
As I was about to take out my pen and writing pad to engrave some notes the plays plot completely lost direction. The plot that we were introduced to. The conflict that was started abandoned. New story followed. The beautiful acting that I was promised at the end turned to some sort of mechanical acting. No motivation to actions. Then after some battling with the plots were being connected the actors lined up and took a bow. Then curtains were called. My mouth was left agape arms frozen then at last my hand managed to massage the hair on my head.
I tried to affirm my hope that maybe this was just a mistake. Maybe we are about to see something better. But then this was followed by another performance with the same mistakes. Then another and another followed on.
In my personal view there was a foretaste of potential from the school kids. But their potential was being nurtured by unscrupulous mentorship. Like goats the students follow the header. From what I observed this is no ma making of the students. The directors played a bigger role in turning this ATEM completion into a mad dogs-circus. I wondered where these directors and playwrights got there training from.
The stories the children showcased lacked a strong conflict. The heroes seemed to exist in what I may call a vacuum. Stories lacked an ironic and unexpected event that would propel the heroes into a conflict. This led toactor’s actions lacking motivation, no defined characters, and the movements leaved a lot to be desired.
Then came the issue of stage setting. When I got home I bent down my knees in prayer that just maybe the theatre gods should appear to the directors and show them the way. Show them that a play will not be christened as good piece with an overwhelmed stage. A choked stage. A stage exciding its capacity like Area 36 Land Rovers.
Some that were even not necessary to the plot. Props that gave actors little spaces to maneuver. Piles that restricted the actor’s freedom of movements. Stuffs that did more damage than good to the actors. Substances that even if they were not brought on stage the meaning of the play wouldn’t change.
I hope that my earnest prayer bears fruits to these directors that we watch a performance to see the action not to see how resourceful one school is in getting an expensive chair or bed.
In the end I tried to offer myself a reiteration my despair to the fact that ATEM major objective to teach English. Worse still the rules and aesthetics of drama have to be manifested in the plays. Even taking it from the queen’s language point of view. The English puked on stage was marred by grammatical, punctuated and spiced by semantic, phonological inaccuracies.
To me what was being proclaimed on stage at were young folks bragging about how much willing they are to memorize and recite the lines. Although a man brags about his member no matter how small but still the kids struggled in remembering what was written on the script. The delivery of the lines lacked conviction and confidence. There was no life in the plays.
And these challenges are not only being seen in ATEM plays but some big theatre groups that have names in the industry bring to stage unfinished production that have since chased away the audience.
But maybe am being too harsh. Maybe am just a frustrated being for missing the big football match in which The Blues taught Red Devils’ Noisy neighbor some footballing lesson. Maybe am an upset soul for wasting my hard earned time. Am a wounded creature for spendingthe hard earned money in under such harsh economic times to watch these performances. Maybe am just an angry guy seeking revenge for lack of audience at real theatrical performances.
But then am yet to be moved to my belief that their still hope. Like Martin Luther king said “we must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope. I refuse to be told that ATEM is a lost sheep in the Dram Khola. I am convinced beyond reasonable doubt that with proper training and research ATEM will be a reckoning force.
I thus employ theatre gurus in Malawi like Smith Likongwe, Mufunanji Magalasi, Zindaba Chisiza Misheck Mzumala just to mention but a few to take up the responsibility of resurrection our theatre industryfrom the grass-root level. There is need for ATEM directors to be told that not each and every play requires one to freeze. There is need to bring in tangible transitions from one scene to another. Everything on stage needs to be justified. Anything that goes on stage need to be explained.
But after all the dramatic gibberish a winner was announced. Anyway that was what the judges were paid for I believe. They were supposed to choses the best from Act from the competitors. And they did a very good Job at it by choosing one such school. Who were the host HHI secondary school, our lady of wisdom and third came Michiru View Girls Secondary School. These will proceed and battle it out in the regionals with other schools from other zones. The other schools hopes of learning better English were squeezed and thrown into the bin to try again next year.
When the curtain fell I headed back to my “mphala” that sits amidst the tummy of St Maries which sits at the foot of Zomba mountain feeling cheated. As a dramatist myself I felt I had witness an insult to the noble profession of Drama.Regretting all the way for one of the many wrong decision I ever made. The decision of taking up the risk of going to watch ATEM DRAMA Competition after. I slept and woke up Monday morning with business as usual.

‘Miracle money’ lures Malawi artists into gospel, working with Prophet Bushiri- Report
A number of musicians from Malawi are leaving secular music to become gospel artists and working with popular Malawian born prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) attracted by ‘Miracle money’.
[caption id="attachment_100596" align="alignright" width="600"] Onesimus | Miracle Money[/caption]
According to published reports, some of the some of the artists that are working with the prophet include Thoko Phiri, Onesimus and Gwamba.
And last week during the birthday bash of the self-styled prophet, who is fondly called Major 1, other gospel artists who performed included Mlaka Maliro and Ethel Kamwendo Banda.
According to a report in The Nation newspaper on Friday, the teams do not only work with the prophet, but they are also known to be his fiercest defenders on issues that attract public criticism, especially on the social platforms such as Facebook.
“For example, when the popular tag of ‘miracle money’ resurfaced, people took it the social media to accuse the Prophet of satanic powers. But the likes of Onesimus went full throttle to defend Bushiri. To cap it all, Onesimus has lately released a chat bursting song titled’ Miracle Money’, which praises Bushiri’s power in churning out miracle money,” reported the daily.
Prophet Bushiri is also on record to have worked with other well-known gospel artists such as Peter Sambo and Patience Namadingo. Artists such as Thocco Katimba and drummer Amos Mlolowah are also said to be ardent supporters of the prophet.
Bushiri’s spokesperson Kelvin Sulungwe told the paper that the Major 1 is also into promotion of youth through job creation and nurturing talent.
“On the other hand, he recognises the fact that the church has a role to create employment for young people to help government fighting the soaring unemployment rates,” said Sulungwe.
Among other things, the Bushiri brand is believed to have been catapulted to fame by prophecies and miracles that are believed to come to pass among his followers.

[caption id="attachment_104560" align="alignright" width="600"] Jason Derulo on Next Level Agency[/caption]
NLA wants to eradicate the trend of 11th hour cancelled international concerts and provide high class entertainers for African promoters, festivals and corporate clients.
Started in 2008, NLA managed to organize tours with American artists in Europe as well as branch off into untapped markets of Asia, Australia, Middle East and Latin America.
NLA’s references include international touring with such names as Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, 2 Chainz, Sean Paul, Nelly, Busta Rhymes, B.o.B., Lupe Fiasco, Jeremih, The Game, Ja Rule, Eve, Dennis Rodman, Gloria Gaynor, Bobby McFerrin, Tiësto, Chuckie and Paul van Dyk to name a few.
For 2016, NLA already has confirmed shows with R&B superstar Jason Derulo in Sri Lanka and Macau, ‘Blurred Lines’ singer Robin Thicke in Philippines, 5 cities tour across Australia with US rapper Tyga and more to be announced.
Two Malawians connection to the continent has made NLA to consider Africa as the next destination for business.
Recently, many international artists failed to appear in Africa for announced performances and collaborations with local artists.
Most of the scheduled concerts get cancelled or fans do not get what they expect, due to unprofessional practice of local promoters or third party booking agents involved.
With its vast experience in bookings and tour management, NLA intends to change the trend and give Africans the entertainment they deserve.

‘Giddes coming to America’ tour: Call for financial support
A group of Malawians facilitating Giddes Chalamanda’s tour to the United States of America has called on well-wishers to financially support the trip.
[caption id="attachment_104722" align="alignright" width="480"] Giddes and the American tour team[/caption]
Chalamanda, an acoustic legendary musician who is in his 80s, in one of his songs – “Buffalo Soldier” – said if he had money, he could go to America. The song was recorded way back in the 60s.
Knowing that this has been Chalamanda’s childhood dream, the group, consisting of young and vibrant Malawians calling themselves “friends of Gidde” have come together to solicit funds to make the musician’s fantasy a reality.
It is also a way of appreciating Chalamanda’s achievement and contributions in the music industry.
Apart from urging well-wishers to contribute, publicity secretary for the grouping, Emmanuel Maliro, said they are planning to organise fundraising music shows.
“There’s a shortfall in our finances to fly him to the U.S. hence the fundraising shows because we want to explore all means possible to take Giddes to America,” said Maliro.
According to Maliro, the veteran artist is expected to perform in Washington D.C on 6th July, 2016 before performing in Indiana days later.
Chalamanda will travel alongside other artists including his managers Edgar Kachere and Davis Njobvu of the “Wazelezeka” fame, and the “Msati Mseke” hit maker Patience Namadingo, among others.

The fashion festival will showcase over 15 designers including Vohni Couture, Nokwakha Qobo who will also be showcasing in Ghana at the Mercedes Benz Africa Fashion Festival this coming May.
Malawi’s Tawire Kumsinda of Tamza Designs, Christie Banda of Designs by Christie, Nellie George of Nells Secret Possessions and Christopher Ngalu of Creative Base Designs will go toe to toe with international designers at the event.
“The capital city of South Africa Tshwane/Pretoria will be filled with fashionistas from all parts of South Africa to celebrate fashion,” explained Bongani Tambo, one of the event managers.
Said Tambo: “The most awaited fashion festival to be held at one of the most historical venue called Jahdawn 012 in the center of the city has also attracted not only local designers but also international from other parts of Africa such as Malawi, Tanzania, Ghana and others”.
Tambo said his team has been working hard to come up with not just a wow event but making sure that the designers must sell themselves.
He explained: “We just don’t want the designers to showcase and then it ends there, we have invited fashion buyers and other fashion related companies to come and support the event, which I believe could be potential investors for the designers.”
Tambo stressed that Tshwane Fashion Festival will not only give a chance to the designers to showcase but also a selection will be made, where three designers and three models will stand a chance to showcase in Ghana, Milan and other countries across Africa.
The event will be covered by South African and international media houses including a live coverage on SABC 2 and Africa Magic.
Christie Banda, who had her first showcase at the 2015 Mzuzu Fashion Week, said she was excited about having her second exhibition outside Malawi.
“It’s a huge step for me and very exciting at the same time considering that I’m new in this industry with my first show being the Mzuzu Fashion Week last year.
“I’m looking forward to showcasing in Pretoria and this is an event where we will not only market ourselves but Malawi our country,” explained the youthful designer.
Last year, Nellie George represented Malawi at RVK Fashion Week which was also organized by the same fashion event organizers.
George has worked with FAME, participated in Mr and Mrs CFC with Cathy Kamthunzi Dickson in 2010 and also participated in other fashion shows in South Africa with Kamthunzi, who had involved her to go and participate with as fashion designers.
Since then she only participated at the John Dumelo and Lilly Alfonso fashion show that took place at BICC in June last year where she was discovered by RVK.
Meanwhile, casting is underway for aspiring models willing to participate at this year’s event.

Return of Malawi songbird Tigris: Sings for struggling single mums
Probably the most dominant diva, Tigris has made a remarkable contribution in showbiz from being a radio personality, an E-Wallet music competition judge to a singer having being featured on one of Malawi’s classic rap songs “Anankabango” by Young Kay.
[caption id="attachment_59313" align="alignright" width="600"] Angela 'Tigris' Mizinga[/caption]
The singer, born Angela Mizinga and also known as Empress Tigris, had a successful solo music career between 2009 and 2012, releasing two albums “Gimme a Break” and “Dreams”.
Tigris was nominated for Best Female Artist and Best Afro Pop Artist in the 2011 Malawian Music Awards, and it was the same year which saw her expanding her fan base across Africa when she performed at the Big Brother Africa Amplified eviction show alongside Maskal.
When Malawi had hope in the singer, who was the dominant female urban music artist, Tigris stopped recording and went MIA in the music circles after giving birth to her first born child, although she attempted a comeback but struggled to beat the record she had set years earlier.
She went on to release a couple of singles, including “Mphatso”, which she wrote and recorded during her second pregnancy in 2014, before she went soundless again, until recently when she started appearing at shows as a back-up artist for rapper Gwamba.
“I took a break from mainstream music because I wanted to spend more time with my new born baby and his father as doing music keeps me busy. There is the issue of studio, band rehearsal, gigs etc.
“I thought it was only fair that I take a two year break to spend more time with my family at least until my son was a bit older so that by the time I want to do music again, I don’t get separation anxiety,” she explained the reason behind her break.
Tigris said in an interview: “I got this song that I wrote in January 2013 and I kept it till the time was right. It is the first single to release after close to two years and that was just to let my audience know that am coming back.”
The singer, who has also worked for radio as presenter at Capital FM, MBC Radio 2 and Galaxy FM, further disclosed that she was changing her music touch.
A couple of weeks ago, she released a comeback emotional song titled “I Need An Angel”, a song that talks about a struggling single mother. She is yet to start promoting the track, which is available for listening below.
“I’m changing my music ‘look’ if I can call it that. I have written songs that talk about life, struggles, time, or maybe to just say ‘conscious music’. This is where I address real issues about life for everyone, a single parent, struggling parents, rebellious children, love issues, street children and young mothers among others.
“I have never really had a specific kind of music that I do. I mean I have done reggae, rock, pop, afro soul, acoustic, a bit of jazz, etc, and I can’t really say I have a specific genre for my next album either.
“But maybe I can best describe it as ‘conscious music’ where there is afro soul, lovers rock, R&B, and just so much more,” elaborated the singer who started off her music career as a conscious reggae-dancehall artist in the early 2000s.
In the song “I Need An Angel”, the singer-songwriter is heard singing, “Am looking for an angel, am searching for an answer/Lord I need a break, can’t keep living like this no more…”
“Hearing this song, they will know what I mean by changing the look. I have matured in both my music and my vocals so I am bringing fireworks this year,” said the optimistic Tigris.--Additional reporting Kimpho Loka

Zodiak TV celeb Ruth Kulaisi speaks of ‘superman fiancé’ Phyzix
Ruth Kulaisi, a Zodiak TV personality who is engaged to celebrated holy hip-hop artist Noel Chikoleka, popularly known as Phyzix. During this chat about her rising television career, the broadcaster also talks about her personal life and shares how her man makes sure she is always safe. She says Phyzo is her superman!
Follow the chat.
How has been your journey from being a regular girl to being the girl on the big screen?
This is so funny and this is how I look at it. I feel like I am going to work but instead of working in the privacy of an office I get to have people watch me do my job. So if I miss work or mess up, everyone knows I wasn’t at work and I have more than my boss judging me and telling me off. [Laughs]. It’s crazy but I really enjoy it. There’s no kujomba [staying away from work] or not doing my work ‘cause it shows on the shows I work on.
[caption id="attachment_104847" align="alignright" width="480"] Ruth Kulaisi:Zodiak TV celebrity[/caption]
What was your reason/motivation for getting a job in TV?
It actually just happened by chance. A friend of mine told me about the auditions Zodiak was holding and they thought I would do a good job at reading the news. So I told my family about it and they really pushed me to do it ‘cause I didn’t want to. I was too scared to go in and try. I gave it a shot anyway and please believe me I was up against some seriously schooled people, but I got it! I was so excited! After working with Zodiak a few months though, I remembered there was a time when someone, after praying with me in 2010, said they really felt I will work in media and on television to be specific, and on my flight back home after being away in school (I did Mass Com, Nursing and Bible College – Bible College the main thing I studied), a random person told me the same thing. So I guess I might have been surprised that I am in television but it was always God’s plan.
What do you think makes you stand out from other TV personalities, male or female? Why should people want to tune in and watch your shows?
Well, I think I am a pretty cool person to spend time with. I sometimes laugh at my own jokes and I really enjoy spending time with me, I think you will too. Plus sometimes I can be real deep – everyone needs a little deep in their lives sometimes. So let’s change the world together, one chat at a time.
A lot has been said about the injustices that come from working in media and being a woman. Have you experienced any of these? (If yes, how did you overcome them?)
When the cameras start rolling and the lights are on. It gets crazy. High emotion, fast pace, fast talk and you gatta think fast and work together as a team. And as creative people, we are really in touch with how we feel so it can be a really touchy bunch of people working together. But if the team understands, ‘it’s game time and let’s get this done. No hard feelings’. It all works out well. How I deal with things – I am very big on saying things as they are and speaking up for myself and others. So If I think something is off or I am being played or mistreated, I address it in and out of the studio. Sometimes people need to be shown where the line is drawn so you can get the job done and live well together, with the understanding that work is work, no hard feelings. This is not easy but it’s doable. In all cases, respect is paramount.
We live in a world where male chauvinism is very prevalent. How do you stay on top of your game without losing your femininity?
[caption id="attachment_104846" align="alignright" width="448"] Phyzix and Ruth[/caption]
I take the same approach, address the issue at hand and move it right along. Of course with respect and a smile. (A touch of femininity there with the smile. [Laughs]).
Working in media usually means living under a spectacle, and your fiancée happens to be a Hip Hop artist. Have you and Phyzix faced any challenges that were caused by your line of work? How did/do you overcome them?
To be honest, Noel is really supportive. So we haven’t really faced any real problems. His main concern is my safety in the places that I do my job. Sometimes I meet some crazy people and I work crazy late hours. So when I am lucky he is around the corner at these things with me. I feel super safe. He is like my superman.
With time comes wisdom, knowledge and experience. What advice would you give your younger self if you were to meet her?
Listen to that inner voice, it will keep you safe and guide you. The Lord speaks and he knows the future, and the steps you need to take. So yeah don’t doubt, just listen and be courageous to take the steps.
A lot of women struggle with self-esteem, validation, and perhaps finding their inner voice and strength. What do you have to say to the women who consider you a role model and look to you for inspiration?
You are enough. It’s so easy to feel lacking with all the things we are put up against, but everything you are right now is enough. And you’re crazy for looking up to me, I thank you.
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Married to my baybay with babies [and] making you quality, international level television.
Who are your inspirations/role models?
My family really inspires me. I have grown up with parents and siblings (Vicky and Pule) that are passionate, compassionate, loving, supportive and they work hard. I want to be like them. They inspire me.
That one song that motivates you?
[caption id="attachment_104848" align="alignright" width="400"] Here Ruth is captured enjoying the moment with a guest on her morning show.[/caption]
Well, this one is a hard. I am a very musical person. I’ve been doing music and singing since I was a little one so I find it hard to stick to a song. They change with how I feel and whatever I am going through at the moment. Right now the second verse of a song called “Love Ran Red” by Chris Tomlin keeps making an appearance in my brain. [Sings]“There’s a place where sin and shame are powerless. Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness”.
Share with us your favorite quote?
“It doesn’t matter how weak or slow your journey starts, but how you finish the race. You can finish strong.” – Pastor Gerard Keehan.
What’s your biggest fear?
I don’t even like talking about it…[Laughs]. It’s easier to pray about it.
Finally, why is working in TV fun?
Well, I know where you work plays a huge part in your work experience and Zodiak has totally been an awesome place to work. The team is super flexible to try things out and very honest, sometimes brutally honest but also very supportive. Otherwise I am not a fan of an office and cubical, so television works well for me. I like having a good chat and I get to do that with all kinds of people over the television every day. Telling crazy stories and just being me. I also like that I interview people from around the world and across Malawi. It’s good fun.

[caption id="attachment_88030" align="alignright" width="600"] Piksy: Got the nod for Kora award[/caption]
Piksy said he has been told of the postponement of the ceremony and said he is notaffected saying he will “ intensify campaign for the votes from fans.” he said
The Kora All Africa Music Awards was scheduled for 20 March in Namibia but event organiserssaid there are some hitches in clearing equipment for the launch.
“In early February, our supplier alerted us to the necessity of securing clearance for the Dome and the equipment to cross the border from South Africa into Namibia.
“We immediately commenced with efforts to secure this clearance with the relevant authorities to enable the crossover.
“Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have to date, not received the clearance to enable our supplier to move the structure and equipment into Namibia in time for a March 20th event date. As we speak, we are still pursuing this crucial waiver.
“As such, we have had to take the difficult decision to postpone the Kora All-Africa Music Awards,” reads a statement from Anoh Herman Nyamke who is the personal assistant to the Kora Awards president Ernest Coovi Adjovi.

Heroine’s welcome for Mhango: Malawi movie star parades Africa M agic award in Lilongwe
Joyce Chavula-Mhango whose Lilongwe movie has won an award for Best Movie Southern Africa at the recently held Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs), arrived in the country on Monday.

The movie maker received a warm welcome at Lilongwe International Airport and went on to parade in a chauffeur driven mini convoy with her accolade in Lilongwe city.
Mhango was quick to thank Malawians for voting.
“Thank you Malawi for making me feel like a star, the State President’s congratulatory message, the airport welcome team, the road show, the overwhelming love and great support from the media et al. Together we made it,” she said.
She told reporters after the award ceremony, “I can’t say I saw this coming, but I was always very calm and not bothered about anything.
“Looking at the names I was up against, these are big people in the film industry, not only in South Africa but on the continent as well. But I had to ask myself as why I was nominated alongside them? It means there’s something in the movie.”
Meanwhile, Malawi Film Association President Ezaius Mkandawire has congratulated the win saying the award will encourage many up-and-coming film makers to work hard and improve their work.
He added that the country needed more torch bearers like Mhango to lead the foundation of a viable industry, stressing that it was high time locally produced films were being recognized.
However, Malawian movie lovers have expressed dismay on how the movie industry is operating in the country, saying they are usually caught unaware when such things happen.
“It’s good that we are being recognized and winning awards. But it’s sad that outside countries get to watch our movies first before us. I wonder where the screenings take place when the movies are done,” bemoaned Yvonne Nsena, a local movie fanatic.
Her remarks could be evidenced in random interviews conducted by this reporter as Lilongwe city dwellers expressed ignorance on the award.
Mhango’s Lilongwe has joined the likes of Shemu Joya’s Seasons of a Life and May Taheradeh’s Mercy’s Blessing which have also won multiple international movie awards.
Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) is an annual accolade presented by Multichoice recognizing outstanding achievement in television and film, voted on by the general public.
The inaugural Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards ceremony was held in Lagos, Nigeria on 9 March 2013, and was broadcast live in more than 50 countries. Entries into the award ceremony are films and TV series that have been aired on Dstv Channels in the previous year.

IKK real name Ishmael Kachali who has just released his 2016 first video Fire, has also bemoaned the impact of piracy.
IKK told Nyasa Times in an interview that said currently the industry is full of artists who lack composure and creativity, a development that has negatively impacted on the growth of the local music industry.
“Frankly speaking, Malawi music is being diluted by bubblegum artists. Everyone wants to be a musician and in the end we have artists that imitate foreign acts or lack composure and creativity,” bemoaned IKK.

artists to be less with their productions”.
IKK revealed he was currently focusing on penetrating international scene following his work with a Ghanaian producer Jay Love on a song Fire in which he featured Ndefeyo’s artist, Bucci.
Jay Love produced the song’s instrumentation but recordings were done at Step-Up Records by Don Foxxy in Chirimba.

‘Dzuka Malawi’ star Kalawe new hit song ‘Major Sanagive’
He surprisingly stormed the local airwaves with his banger, Dzuka Malawi, which gave birth to remixes with other equally poetic rappers including Fredokiss. He proved maturity in his delivery, a scenario that prompted fans to call him the 'music genius.'
[caption id="attachment_93782" align="alignright" width="600"] Kalawe made a name in Dzuka Malawi music video: His new song is 'Major Sanagive'[/caption]
That is Kalawe.
Even though he made a name in the country, he never lost his focus. As a patriot, his music is all about Malawi. Every time he drops a song, he is like ‘let Malawi benefit from this one.’
Unlike other selfish musicians in the country who are always on every spot digging graves for fellow countrymen, Kalawe has humbly laughed their ill deeds by appreciating Malawi’s Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s work who some people choose to fight God by dirtying the anointed man’s name.
Despite every smile that Bushiri who is currently ministering from South Africa gave his country, some are paid to write and spread everything that will hinder down his path just for reasons they are not sure of. Many did songs ridiculing Bushiri’s ministry and claimed his miracles to be fake but the anointed man moved from glory to glory.
And Kalawe did not miss that in his ‘Major Sanagive’ song where he is rapping in thanking the prophet for his efforts to contain the hunger roar in the country even no much support to school his mate Mandela Third Eye Mwanza who took the fight with Heavens.
“Iyi ndi nkhani yopherezera mwambi oti mneneri samalemekezedwa kwawo,’’ introduces the song Kalawe using a biblical verse that says a prophet is always haunted by his people, just like Jesus Christ who was crucified by his own countrymen.
He further in the song highlights why the Major Prophet moved from Mzuzu to Lilongwe and later found an environment in a foreign land and treated as a king while his people stoned him despite their nation being sick and needed a quick God’s intervention.
The song has a lot.
Simply a food for thought for people who are equipped to fight God when God is using his messengers to save them from the shame of sin which comes with poverty and hunger.
According to Kalawe’s gospel, poverty leads to jealousy and Malawi being the poorest country needs to swallow its pride and accept Bushiri so that devil will be taken down from wheeling down the nation’s economy.
The song Major Sanagive (Major 1 did not give up) has been recorded at SU Records, mastered by Janta with a beat that will make even Satan himself come in and appreciate the good work Heavenly God is doing through his Prophet Bushiri.
“I know I might get me a few more critics for this one, some crooked minds be thinking I do this for the miracle money,’’ Kalawe foretell in the song, hence asking the country if we are ready to lose the Prophet sent down to earth from above and the rest is in the song.

Gospel singer Ronald Thamakela cuts third album ‘Mau Anu’
After being silent for sometime in the gospel music domain, Lilongwe-based artist Ronald Thamakera is back with a new album titled “Mau Anu”.
[caption id="attachment_105276" align="alignright" width="560"] Gospel musician Ronald Thamakela[/caption]
The album, which has six singles already playing on radio and available for streaming and downloads, was released a week ago.
Thamakela is confident enough that he has done a good job with his third release, describing it as mature work.
“Mau Anu” carries the message of hope and salvation and the artist believes that people will be transformed after listening to the music.
Thamakela, who is also a student at Pentecostal Life University where he is doing accountancy and finance, indicates it was tough to juggle studies and recordings.
“It was a tough period making sure that I had to record my music and at the same time not miss any class, but glory be to God, I have made,” he shares his experience.
Thamakela worked with the country’s renowned producers/musicians Joseph Tembo and Lloyd Phiri.
The artist’s manager, Chris Loka, reveals that the singer will be travelling to rural to minister through music. These are the areas where other musicians do not go due to bad road networks.
Loka says apart from music Thamakela and his management will also be engaged in charitable by among others making donations to schools, orphanages and hospitals.
“We understand that people need spiritual help, but it also came to our senses that with the little we can get through our music, we can also reach out to people with physical help,” explains Loka.
Some of the tracks on Thamakela’s new album include the title track, “MwandichitiraZazikulu”, “TizaimbaHossana”, “MbuyeMumandikwanira”, “TimauzaMbuye”,TipempheYesu”and “TidalirePemphero”.
Thamakela came to limelight in 2012 when he released his debut album titled “UlindiMwai”, before he released the second one “MwandichotsaKutali” in 2014.
