The album, which has been 65 years in the making, features artists from around the world remixing the folk songs of Nyasaland (recorded in the 1950’s by ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey).
“Beating Heart Malawi” introduces previously unheard sounds through contemporary production and raising money for assistance in the areas where the music was originally recorded.
Artists performing on the night include Rudimental DJ, Kidnap KID, My Nu Leng, Petar Rabbit from UK and Drew Moyo, Lawi, Waliko, Malawi Police Orchestra, Mangochi Beni Dancers from Malawi.
Speaking to Nyasa Times, one of the headliners, Norwegian based Drew Moyo said he was happy and looking forward to perform back home.
He explained, “It is a great honour to be part of this concert and I feel it will be a great opportunity for me to share my latest productions to my home country as well the international community that is expected to be there. Malawi already has some art performance platforms of this kind contributing a great deal of exposure of our culture, music and art.”
Moyo further added that the concert proves how Malawi is growing in the art industry.
“This is a great opportunity for Malawian artists to meet with other international artists and share ideas and experiences which are vital parts for the development and growth of every artist,” he said.
Tickets are at $15 and are currently available from Living Room Cafe, Mabuya Camp in Lilongwe, Annie’s Lodge, Cape Maclear and Annie’s Lodge Nyambadwe in Blantyre.
